Junior League of Ocala is committed to creating a better Ocala/Marion County through its active involvement in a variety of community service projects. From bringing projects to our area such as the Black Stallion Literacy Project, which touches each 1st grader in the county, to working with other community organizations such as Haven House, the Junior League of Ocala is constantly looking for ways to give back to our community. If you have a suggestion for a community service project for the Junior League of Ocala, please contact juniorleagueofocala@gmail.com.
***We are currently accepting RFP's for our Community Impact Project, available here.
Past Projects Include:
Tuscawilla Park Playground/Family Pavilion, Black Stallion Literacy Project, Haven House, Discovery Science Center, and the Silver River Museum
Tuscawilla Park Playground/Family Pavilion
In the early spring of 2010 the Junior League of Ocala donated $70,000 to the City of Ocala to help fund the new Tuscawilla Park Playground and Family Picnic Pavilion. On March 20th, many Junior League members gathered with other members of the community to assemble the universal playground and family picnic pavilion. The universal playground allows handicapped children (depending on their abilities) to play alongside able-bodied children, thus making the new facility more inclusive to the children of the community. The new playground is located across Northeast Sanchez Avenue from the old armory, which is now the Discovery Center.
Black Stallion Literacy Project
Since its Marion County debut in 2002 until 2010, The Black Stallion Literacy Project introducee over 2,500 Marion County children annually to the joy of reading through the magic of horses and the popular Black Stallion books by Walter Farley.
The Junior League of Ocala along with its partners, the Florida Thoroughbred Charities and the Public Education Foundation, made this project, the largest of its kind in the nation, a resounding 8 year success in Marion County.
Done in a Day
The vision of Done In A Day is for Junior League members to assist and provide visibility to local non-profit agencies. When community organizations or charities are limited in achieving their goals due to a lack of manpower, this committee provides a dedicated group of JLO volunteers to work on short-term projects. Our volunteers participate in six to eight diverse DIAD projects every year, consisting of an evening, one day, or a weekend effort. Junior League of Ocala also provides financial support to some organizations by purchasing desperately needed items. The Junior League of Ocala chooses projects which focus mainly on the needs of women and children in Marion County.
Examples of past Done in a Day projects include providing entertainment and mentoring to girls at Haven House, painting a mural at the TimberRidge ER and volunteering at Celebrate Adoption.
